Scheduling
System for NASA astronauts
CLIENT:
NASA – Astronauts Office
PROJECT:
Astronaut Scheduling Tool
CHALLENGE:
Replace a cumbersome, inflexible and inefficient, paper-based astronaut
scheduling system with one capable of distributing schedules via an
electronic and portable medium.
OPERATING
ENVIRONMENT:
Hardware: Compaq Server, PCs and Timex watches
Software: Microsoft NT Server, SQL Server, Internet Information Server, dbWeb,
Visual Basic, Windows 95, Exchange, Word and Schedule+
SOLUTIONS:
Tietronix developed a software-based scheduling system to replace the existing paper-based astronaut scheduling system (DOS and R:BASE) with current technology using GUI, ODBC and Internet tools.
Repair the former system to ensure Y2K compatibility
RESULTS:
- Schedules now sent to astronauts and recipients via the Internet and/or e-mail
- Output of scheduling application integrated with Microsoft Schedule+,
thus enabling astronauts to download schedules to their Timex watches.
- Software development costs reduced with use of OOAD and RAD techniques.
