PROJECT: PDA-Based System for Critical Data Communication (Prototype)

CHALLENGE: Create a user-friendly alternative to the inflexible, paper-based checklist used for the Shuttle’s mission-critical data communication

OPERATING ENVIRONMENT:
Hardware: Kneeboard, WinCE
Software: VC++

SOLUTIONS:

• Develop a PDA-based application system for Situational Awareness during the Shuttle ascent phase
• Build and deploy an electronic procedure telemetry viewer tool for astronauts to monitor critical Shuttle ascent data and efficiently execute appropriate navigation procedures in the event of a malfunction.

RESULTS:

• The new application displays landing opportunities on a worldmap
  along with steps for corresponding landing procedures.
